Exploring Creativity in Times of Turmoil

After doing B.F.A, Manash Talukdar took a drop for 3 years during which he was navigating the challenging waters of emotional and financial turmoil. During this tumultuous time, his artworks became a significant outlet, serving as a medium through which he sought to capture elusive moments of happiness, even if they were seldom attained. These creations were not merely expressions of his struggles but also a reflection of his inner state, illustrating the depth of his feelings and the complexities of his situation. He often found himself lost in the process of creation, each brushstroke a silent dialogue with his emotions. Looking back, he considers this phase of his life, marked by a profound sense of melancholy, to be one of the most enlightening learning periods he has ever experienced. Amidst the shadows of despair, he discovered resilience and insights that would ultimately shape his artistic journey, paving the way for a future where art became not just a means of survival but a pathway to understanding himself and the world around him.

Manash wanted a change of environment away from home, so he went to Shantineketan in Kolkatta in 2013. He spent almost a year there doing a lot of sketches and watercolours, capturing the vibrant essence of the landscape and the people around him. Just to be a part of the Campus, he enrolled himself in Bhasha Bhawan to learn the German language. He was well acquainted with the students of the Kala Bhawan, forming friendships and

collaborating with fellow artists, and he often attended various events at the campus, immersing himself in the rich artistic and cultural scene. The Kopai River and the distinct red soil of Shantineketan have inspired him to create many watercolours outdoors, allowing him to connect with nature while honing his craft, and leaving a lasting impact on his artistic journey.

Manash’s father came to see his son in Shantineketan. His father, eager to spend more time with him, asked him to accompany him on his way back home, and to this request, Manash readily agreed, knowing that it was mid-summer and the heat could be quite unbearable. As they journeyed together, they reminisced about shared memories and laughter, enjoying each other’s company amidst the scenic beauty of their surroundings. This trip felt special, as they bonded over stories and future plans, but little did Manash know that soon after he came back home, his world would turn upside down. Within a year, his father had suddenly passed away, leaving a void that would forever change Manash’s life and fill his heart with sorrow and longing for all the moments they could have shared.

During 2012-2015, he has done some artworks on textile as well. These works are much more than just a piece of work; they serve as a profound reflection into the intricate making process and provide a kaleidoscopic view into his creative journey, which is deeply meditative, inquisitive, and bold in its risk-taking approach. Each textile artwork invites the viewer to explore layers of meaning and emotion, revealing the artist’s personal narrative woven into the fabric. Its naïve experimentation, filled with vibrant colors and unconventional techniques, are

a testament to his inner reality, showcasing not only his artistic evolution but also his willingness to embrace imperfection and uncertainty in the pursuit of authenticity. Through these pieces, he challenges conventional notions of art, encouraging both himself and the audience to engage in a dialogue about the nature of creativity and the beauty found within the process.
